Thursday, April 4th, 2013 Group Facilitation Questions:

1) After reading Salmon’s Main Street in conjunction with the downtown Cheney mini-tour, do you find her concept relatively obvious to the untrained citizen?  Or do you feel the outward appearance of “hometowns” goes unnoticed by the majority of those living in it, even those born and raised?  What implications does your answer suggest?

2) In Kyvig and Marty's Nearby History: Exploring the Past Around You, what is "nearby history" and how is it applicable to onlookers trying to learn about their hometown?

3) In Wikipedia’s description of Ghost Signs, it is stated that owners of structures with ghost signs on them are asked by conservationists to keep and preserve the signs.  When such advertisements display unapproved social activities, such as promoting tobacco products, alcohol, and signs that state 'White Help Only', is it acceptable to strongly urge owners to keep those advertisements up, as well as self-fund their preservation?

 4) In Barry’s In a City Fighting Blight, ‘Ghost Signs’ as Portals to a Bygone Era, our author describes ghost signs as “expired expressions of commercialism”, and comments on his assertion that these signs express “little care for art or posterity.” But he goes on to point out that onlookers are intrigued with them and find great interest in them.  Do you think that in a city that is trying to reface and rebuild, they should be forced to preserve the signs, or say goodbye and clean them up, as with the case of Highland Park?  Are there solutions that meet in the middle?

5) Jones’ What are Ghost Signs? and his photography depict a great deal of interest in ghost signs, suggesting that others’ interest is peeked as well, only once the signs are pointed out to them.  Do you agree with Jones on what makes particular ghost signs more interesting than others?  And do you agree with him that ghost signs in no way should be restored or recreated?

6) In the Jefferson County Historical Society publication A Survey of Port Townsend’s Ghost Signs and Murals, do you think the work done to depict the importance of preserving ghost signs, as opposed to restoring or even destroying them, does a suitable job in emphasizing the historical, cultural and societal significance of ghost signs?  How do you feel about the presentation of this report?
